Abstract
Studies were carried out to determine the effect of protamine sulfate on the encephalitogenic activity of suspensions of rabbit and mouse brain tissue when inoculated into guinea pigs and monkeys together with adjuvant. Crude uncentrifuged suspensions of rabbit brain produced marked encephalomyelitis in over 50% of the animals. Following low speed centrifugation this incidence was decreased somewhat but not eliminated. Protamine sulfate appeared to sediment most if not all of the encephalitogenic components of both rabbit and mouse brain. In all these studies, mouse brain produced less encephalopathy than did rabbit tissue. Keywords
