Abstract
Lens-induced uveitis in nonsensitized rats occurred at the 6th to 11th day following a single intravitreal injection of albuminoid but not crystallin antigens. The albuminoid acts apparently as a natural adjuvant. The inflammatory response to albuminoid was dominated by round cell infiltrates similar to the human disease. Autosensitization in inbred rats obtained by injection of whole lens material of littermates with Freund’s adjuvant produced only anti-α-crystallin antibody, despite the presence of all other lens antigens. This points to the α-crystallin antigen, particularly in albuminoid as the dominant autoantigen certainly in the humoral (and probably in the cellular) components of the pathogenesis of lens-induced uveitis. Keywords
