Abstract
In normal rats aged up to 21 days, between 0.2% and 06% of the cells in the sub‐ependymal and external granular layers show nuclear pyknosis and fragmentation. These cells are postmitotic. In control animals, an estimated 3.2% or less of newly acquired neurones and glia are lost by cell death. In undernourished rats, more pyknotic nuclei are found in the germinal layers of the brain at 12 days, when loss of newly acquired cells may be 3.7–7.8%.Keywords
