Exchange Energy of an Electron Gas in a Magnetic Field

Abstract
The exchange energy of an electron gas is calculated in the zero-temperature limit. In high magnetic fields, it is shown that the exchange energy dominates the independent-particle energy, but in low and intermediate fields becomes much less important. Modifications due to band structure and application to the de Hass-van Alphen effect are discussed briefly.
