Abstract
To the Editor: A high prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica infection has been reported in homosexual men. Sexual practices such as oral–anal intercourse are thought to facilitate transmission of the parasite.1 The high rate of occurrence of amebic infection has been detected by means of stool examination and culture. We recently studied the prevalence of amebas in homosexual men living in Italy by looking for specific antibodies in the serum.Testing for antiamebic antibodies with an indirect enzyme immunoassay was carried out in serum samples from 138 homosexual men (mean age, 25.7 years; range, 21 to 54) enrolled in a cohort . . .Keywords
