A Vocal Hygiene Program for School-Age Children

Abstract
Thirty-eight elementary grade school children with hoarse voices participated in a six-lesson, cartoon-illustrated vocal hygiene program that provided information concerning the human voice, voice quality, vocal abuse, and proper use of the voice. Each child was given a pre- and postinstruction test of vocal hygiene concepts. Analysis of the test results indicates that the children learned the presented vocal hygiene concepts. The children’s participation in the program led to self discovery of abusive vocal behaviors and to realistic goals for reducing vocal abuse.
