Abstract
The starting point for this analysis of women’s relationship to citizenship is the ‘public-private’ divide which underpins the very meaning of citizenship. Using a tripartite division of the public sphere, the article analyses women’s position in relation to the paid economy, the state and the polity. It focuses, in particular, on the implications of the sexual division of paid and unpaid labour for citizenship rights and obligations. The article concludes by asking whether the route to women’s citizenship lies through equality or difference, or whether this very formulation represents a cul-de-sac. It argues that radical changes in both the ‘private’ sphere and each of the public spheres, as well as a challenge to the rigid separation of the two, are required. Keywords
