Abstract
No great nation can long afford to be sundered by a memory.- George Bush, inaugural address, 1989. President Bush made this statement in regard to the Vietnam War, but it might equally serve as an epigraph for the "historikerstreit," the historian's dispute, that erupted in Germany in 1986. The memory in question is the Holocaust, and more generally the Nazi period, and the dispute concerns how both scholars and the general public can come to terms with these aspects of Germany's past.
