Abstract
Case examples from a forensic psychiatry service are described to illustrate the knock-on effects of sexual abuse, which go beyond perpetrator and victim to affect their families and friends, and professionals who deal with this problem. Society and professionals have difficulty dealing with the deviant sexuality of the abusers. An interactional model of societal, legal, agency, client and personal factors can aid an understanding of the ripple effects' of sexual abuse. Workers in this field need to appreciate the social context and the professionalism of the difficult work they do.Keywords
