Abstract
The effects of combinations of 1,10-phenanthronline with nalidixic acid (NA) and piromidic acid (PA) and those of kanamycin (KM) on the growth of E. coli were measured by the filter paper strip agar diffusion method. 1,10-phenanthroline was antagonistic to NA and PA, and KM was additive with NA and PA. Correlation of these findings with the mediating effects of these agents on the model electron transfer system (Fe2+-cytochrome c) is discussed with respect to electron transfer via non-haem iron which has been recently revealed in the bacterial membranes. Keywords
