Gallbladder Mucosa in Cholecystography

Abstract
A histochemical study of the mucosa of 85 freshly resected gallbladders was carried out. These were obtained from patients who had had a recent cholecystogram prior to surgery. There appeared to be a positive correlation between the degree of opacification of the gallbladder by the opaque material in the cholecystogram and the presence of (1) a relatively abundant mucosa, and (2) fluorescent granules in the basilar mucosal cells containing hydrolyzing enzymes. Consideration is given to what bearing, if any, these findings may have on a postulated reabsorption of cholecystographic media from the gallbladder lumen—a phenomenon that may play a role in some instances of poor or nonvisualization of the gallbladder in clinical cholecystography.
