Abstract
The conventional two-dimensional plane strain finite-element method is extended to calculate the stresses and birefringence of polarisation-maintaining optical fibres which have different Young's modulus and Poisson ratio in different regions of the fibre cross-section. The method is used to study the dependence of the fibre beat-length on the applied axial strain. Keywords
