Abstract
The microbiological sterilizing characteristics of an acid aqueous (2% w/w) solution of 1,5 pentanedial potentiated with a specific mixture of nonionic ethoxylates of isomeric linear alcohols (0.25% w/w) are described. Aldehyde biocidal mechanisms are reviewed and a theoretical interpretation is proposed for the cidal synergism of some nonionic additives, heat and ultrasonic irradiation. Potentiated acid 1,5 pentanedial solution is a rapidly acting, wide-spectrum chemical sterilant highly efficient against vegetative organisms, viruses, mycobacteria, pathogenic fungi and bacterial spores. The systemic toxicity of the product is low. Other advantages of the product are discussed.
