Changes in Murine Resistance to Listeria monocytogenes Infection Induced by Amphotericin B

Abstract
Injection of amphotericin B into mice 24 hr before infection with Listeria monocytogenes stimulated host resistance. In contrast, host resistance was decreased when the antibiotic was injected after infection with L. monocytogenes. In comparison with cell from untreated animals, increased microbicidal activity was observed in peritoneal exudate cells of mice injected iv with the polyene 24 hr before sacrifice. In-vitro incubation of normal murine peritoneal exudate cells with amphotericin B resulted in decreased microbicidal activity. Amphotericin B had no in-vitro effect on the viability of L. monocytogenes.
