Abstract
The glycogen deposits in the adipose tissue of rats after injn. of insulin, or by refeeding with carbohydrate after a period of fasting, were greater in the brown fat. Animals whose thyroid function was abolished by thiouracil, and castrated, deposited more glycogen in the brown fat than normal animals. These differences were not detectable in white fat. The histochemical reaction of Gomori for lipase was applied to both types of fat, substrates being Tween 40, Tween 60, and Product 81. The subcutaneous white fat of the back seems to be devoid of lipase, whereas the interscapular brown fat contains a large amt. in the cytoplasm between the lipid vacuoles.
