Bond dissociation energies in 2‐methoxy‐3‐phenylpropionitrile and in bibenzyl; capto‐dative stabilization of the cyano methoxy methyl radical

Abstract
In the temperature region of 800–900K the rate of CC bond homolysis in 2‐methoxy‐3‐phenylpropionitrile (˜1a) is 2‐3 times faster than in bibenzyl (˜2a), from which it is inferred that the “capto‐dative” stabilization of the CH(OMe)CN radical is ca. 4 kcal/mol.Keywords
