Evolution of the Renal Diet in Hemodialysis Using Urea Kinetic Modeling

Abstract
Diet recommendations for dialysis patients have become more standardized. Formerly orders for diets by physicians were often vague or inflexible and did not allow dietitians to treat patients individually. National Renal Diet guidelines are better bases for prescriptions. They are more accommodating, permit patient-specific recommendations, and have many other advantages. However, these new recommendations may confuse patients, especially if only some providers adopt them. Monitoring of dialysis adequacy has also changed. Urea kinetic modeling (UKM) is considered to be the optimal measurement of dialysis adequacy; it correlates well with data indicating that more dialysis decreases morbidity and mortality. Current research aims at further increasing the effectiveness of dialysis therapy to improve outcomes.
