Protothecosis of the Olecranon Bursa Caused by Achloric Algae

Abstract
Achloric algae produce a rare infection called protothecosis. The organism may cause either a cutaneous eruption or a chronic granulomatous inflammation particularly localized to the olecranon bursa. Dissemination is possible, and only total surgical excision is known to be curative. Diagnosis is achieved by demonstration of the characteristic morphology of the organisms in either tissue or culture, particularly when the morula-like sporangium is seen.
