Cisternal fluid oxygen tension in man

Abstract
Using the Beckman microelectrode for determination of O2 tension, an examination of the cisternal fluid O2 tension in 12 patients under various conditions was carried out. In 3 patients, we compared the cisternal O2 tension with the arterial O2 tension and the O2 tension of the superior bulb of the internal jugular vein. Fair evidence that cisternal O2 tension represents the mean O2 tension of the surrounding cerebral tissue and that it is an acceptable image of rapid changes in cerebral blood flow was found. As the cisternal O2 tension seems to reflect the available O2 to the brain, it is a useful tool in the evaluation of various therapeutic principles against cerebral hypoxia.
