Abstract
This work was designed to locate experimentally in the monkey (Macaca mulatta) the position of the rotational axis of the superior oblique muscle (SO), to observe how the position of this axis was affected by eye movements into various gaze positions, to observe and measure the eye movements produced by the contraction of the SO, to study the interaction of the other extraocular muscles with the SO, and to discover whether or not the function of the SO varied when different brain sites were stimulated. The results of these experiments have led to a concept of the action of the SO that differs in important details from the currently accepted ideas of the action of this muscle.1-3This concept represents a modification of the view I expressed in previous papers,4,5ie, that the various components of the eye movement produced by this muscle were of the same magnitude
