Abstract
In searching about for a subject that might be of interest, several things conspired to influence me in the choice of lung abscess. Any disease that has a mortality as high as this is a proper subject for consideration before this section. Of equal importance but less emphasized is the long period of disability and hospitalization, thus bringing about serious social and economic problems. Because this disease is not a very common one, because it is usually treated in the first instance by the family physician who has had no considerable experience with it, and because it is difficult from the literature to evaluate any particular form of treatment, I feel that a discussion of this disease may be of value. It might at this point be interesting to relate that several years ago in the San Francisco Bay region a little group was formed, composed mostly of thoracic surgeons
