Frictional Slip Between Layer and Substrate

Abstract
Certain aspects of frictional slip in elasticity are analyzed. The paper considers a layer that is pressed uniformly against a substrate with identical elastic constants and, subsequently, subjected to a tangential concentrated load. If the magnitude of the tangential load is gradually increased, a localized slip zone develops and, for low levels of friction, a second slip starts to grow before separation sets in. The problem is formulated using known results from dislocation theory. The resulting singular integral equations are solved numerically and illustrative results presented graphically.
