Abstract
Two years experi-ence is reported in a psychogeriatric unit which takes 3/4 of the admissions over the age of 65 to a mental hospital. There was a reduction of 1/3 in the demand for shorter stay beds (occupied under 5 years) in association with a policy of fewer patients growing old in hospital and thus a progressive reduction in the number of beds occupied for more than five years. The consequent saving of beds should be sufficient to meet the psychogeriatric demands of an aging population, but will be insufficient to meet the present increasing overflow from general and geriatric hospitals. Keywords
