Abstract
FOR many years an eye on the clock has been a stringent requirement for gram staining. Dr. Christian Gram1 himself no doubt would be surprised at the dedicated precision in carrying out each step of his procedure. He was more relaxed and applied the stain for one to three minutes and the iodine for a similar indefinite time.
