Abstract
P. tularensis was isolated from the sputum of 3 patients suffering from tularemia by inoculating diluted sputum into mice intraperit. or into guinea pigs subcut. None of these individuals had symptoms referrable to the respiratory tract and only 1 individual had minimal evidence of involvement of the respiratory tract as shown by x-ray examination of the chest. In this case, no signs of pulmonary involvement were noted by physical examination. The study of sputum in cases of tularemia, especially where no local lesions are present, may be used as a method of isolating the etiological agent.
