Evidence for a Macrophage-Mediated Effect of Poliovirus on the Lymphocyte Response to Phytohemagglutinin

Abstract
Poliovirus inhibits the response of human peripheral leukocytes to phytohemagglutinin (PHA). The inhibitory activity requires the presence of macrophages. There is no evidence that lymphocytes are capable of supporting viral replication. On the other hand, the virus multiplies in macrophages derived from monocytes. Further, macrophages enhance the response of lymphocytes to PHA, but the cooperation between these cell types is absent in virus-infected cultures. The findings support the suggestion that poliovirus inhibits the response of leukocytes not by direct action on lymphocytes but by suppressing the enhancing effect of the macrophage.
