Abstract
Within the framework of a linear-response correlation-function approach to the collective modes in an inhomogeneous electron gas, a theory is given of the effect of retardation on surface plasmons. The case of a sharp metal-vacuum interface is worked out in detail as an illustration of the general formalism. Keywords
