Separation of Thoraco-Omphalopagus “Siamese” Twins

Abstract
A detailed account of the history, physical findings, observation, operative separation, pathology and patho-genesis of death in the 5th set of conjoined twins studied at the University of Tennessee is presented. Successful surgical separation was accomplished; however, both twins died in the early postoperative period from the results of a remarkable combination of congenital anomalies. Circulatory defects produced by separation, which led to the death of both infants, are detailed. Findings from extensive preoperative studies are correlated with the pathogenesis of death in these infants.
