STUDIES ON THE INFLUENCE OF ANABOLIC STEROIDS ON EXPERIMENTAL ATHEROMA: ANDROSTANOLONE

Abstract
SUMMARY: The effect of androstanolone on experimentally induced atheroma in cockerels is described. It was found that daily doses of 5 and 25 mg over the last 3 weeks of an 8-week feeding experiment resulted in a significantly lower incidence of coronary atheroma. The incidence of aortic atheroma was not reduced but its severity appeared to be less. These results were obtained without a significant alteration in either the plasma cholesterol or phospholipid levels, or in the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio. The significance of the results is briefly discussed.
