Japanese B Encephalitis

Abstract
A case is reported of Japanese B encephalitis occurring in a six-year-old child who had recently arrived in New York from Japan. Symptoms included those of a febrile meningoencephalitis. The spinal fluid showed no increase in cells. However, complement fixation studies confirmed the diagnosis. The epidemiological, diagnostic, and pathological features of Japanese B encephalitis are discussed. It is stressed that rapid transportation of personnel, especially military, from infected areas in the Far East may be responsible for future cases of Japanese B encephalitis occurring in the United States.
