Abstract
The general-purpose stored-program computer has become more and more prevalent as the central on-line element in today's facilities for low-energy nuclear research. This paper explores the techniques for on-line data taking and the benefits to be derived from the computer usage. The operating concepts of early and present installations are surveyed and related to the computer hardware and software that has been selected. A look is taken at some proposed installations for the future, and the issues they raise.Keywords
