Primordial galactic magnetic fields from axion domain walls at the QCD phase transition
Abstract
In this letter, we propose a mechanism to generate microgauss large-scale magnetic fields with correlation lengths of 100 kpc. Axion domain walls generate these fields at the QCD phase transition with Hubble size correlation. Maximal strong CP violation induced by the axion field generates near maximal helicity (Chern-Simons) which supports an "inverse cascade" allowing the initial correlations to grow to 100 kpc today. We calculate the generated electromagnetic fields in terms of the QCD parameters and discuss the effects of the resulting fields. Keywords
