Abstract
When a patient presents with chest pain, the first order of business is likely to be differentiation of cardiac from noncardiac etiology. Recently, there has been increasing attention focused on disorders of esophageal motility. At least 10 discrete entities have now been identified. Their pathogenesis and diagnostic characteristics are discussed in this first segment of a two-part article. Keywords
