Excitation of species in active nitrogen. Part 1.—Mercury Hg(63P1)

Abstract
Measurements on the emission of the mercury resonance line at 253.7 nm from active nitrogen containing measured amounts of mercury vapour confirm that Hg(63P1) is excited predominantly by N2(A3Σ+ u) which is formed in approximately half the three body recombinations of ground state nitrogen atoms with M = N2 or Ar. Rate coefficients are given for some processes removing N2(A).
