Pigment Analysis of the Glajor Gospel Book of U.C.L.A.

Abstract
The unpublished Gospel book from the Armenian school of Glajor and now held by U.C.L.A. contains numerous miniatures depicting scenes from the life of Christ. On the basis of stylistic analysis, five distinct painters of these miniatures, working in two different ateliers, have been identified. Seventy-six samples, selected to yield the spectrum of hues from each artist, were abstracted from the MS. and analyzed by standard methods. The resulting palette was compared with pigments known to be in use at the same time in Byzantium and western Europe. /// Le recueil non publié de l'Evangile de l'école arménienne de Glajor, conservé par l'U.C.L.A., contient de nombreuses miniatures décrivant la vie du Christ. Cinq peintres de ces miniatures travaillant dans deux ateliers différents ont pu être distingués sur la base de critères stylistiques. Soixante seize échantillons ont été prélevés sur les couleurs du manuscrit et analysés par les méthodes habituelles. La palette obtenue a été comparée aux pigments connus pour avoir été utilisés à la même époque dans l'empire byzantin et en Europe occidentale. /// Das unveröffentlichte Evangeliumbuch aus der Armenischen Schule von Glajor, jetzt im Besitz der U.C.L.A., enthält zahlreiche Miniaturen, die Scenen aus dem Leben Christi beschreiben. Auf der Grundlage stilistischer Analyse wurden fünf verschiedene Maler dieser Miniaturen, die in zwei verschiedenen Ateliers arbeiten, identifiziert. Sechsundsiebzig Muster, ausgewählt, um das Spektrum der Pigmentfarben eines jeden Künstlers zu erhalten, wurden dem Buch entnommen und durch Standardmethoden analysiert. Die sich ergebende Palette wurde mit Pigmenten verglichen von denen man weiss, dass sie zur gleichen Zeit in Byzanz und West-Europa in Gebrauch waren.
