Abstract
Suprasentential refers to an apparently extraneous vocal phenomenon such as “oh,” “ah,” “well,” “you know,” a mid-sentence speech hesitation or a seemingly unconnected comment which, while not a necessary part of a sentence, contributes when present to vocal interaction. Suprasententials may serve to retain control of the speech-end of the dialogue, play a role in emotional expression, solicit a response from the person spoken to, or otherwise sustain conversation. A classification including nine kinds of suprasentential is suggested. A method for eliciting sustained speech via picture-story items and open-ended discussion items in a dyadic situation is described.
