Abstract
Photoelectric emission from well-annealed evaporated nickel films can be resolved by computation to determine the work functions of the crystal planes exposed at the surface. This technique has been applied to interpret surface potential measurements for xenon adsorbed on nickel films. The surface potential was found to increase with coverage, the upper limiting values being 0.16 eV for the (111) plane and 0.30 eV for the (100) plane. Much higher values, up to 0.95 eV, were found for rough surfaces of low initial work function. The variation of surface potential with coverage on the (100) plane was found to be stepwise suggesting the existence of at least two submonolayer ordered surface lattices for adsorbed xenon. Keywords
