Abstract
This paper provides a systematic overview of the existing literature on HRM and industrial relations in both the United States and Britain. It examines the assumptions in the U.S. literature and the British critique of those assumptions. It concludes that HRM is not uniformly anti-union; is complementary to industrial relations and cannot supplant it.Keywords
