Abstract
To the Editor: —The article by Liebman on ocular manifestations of Riley-Day syndrome in the November, 1956, issue of the Archives, page 719, presents descriptions and illustrations of a condition we see much of in India. The condition is lack of vitamin A, which leads to more blindness among children in the parts of India in which I have worked than any other condition. The dryness of the conjunctival sac, the lack of tears, is only part of a process in which the mucous membranes of the whole body lose their mucous quality and become squamous. The cornea may be dull, epithelium-thick or deeper, or may become like white blotting paper in appearance and consistency. The mystery of keratomalacia is the tremendously toxic action on the cornea. How can such a strong and beautiful organ, through which only Greishaber's needles will go easily, become so soft so quickly? Would thatKeywords
