Abstract
Mycoplasma (pleuropneumonia-like organisms) transmitted with Murphy-Sturm lymphosarcoma at the time of transplant did not modify tumor growth in Holtzman rats but mildly increased the low incidence of spontaneous tumor regression and increased the regression due to intravenously injected bacterial capsular polysaccharide. Tumors were readily infected by the intravenous injection of mycoplasma. Virulence of the microorganisms was maintained in vitro by the addition of sterile tumor extract to culture media. When mycoplasma were injected prior to the transplant of tumor cells, persistent polyarthritis developed but mycoplasma did not appear in the subsequent tumor. When an infected and non-infected tumor were both transplanted to the same rat, mycoplasma appeared in the original non-infected tumor after moderate tumor size was attained. Keywords
