Abstract
Interlaboratory studies initiated by the Commission of the European Communities tested 3 methods for determining the global migration of plastic materials in liquids simulating fatty foodstuffs. In each method, a sample of plastic material was weighed before and after it was placed in contact with fatty simulant. The fat absorbed by the sample, extracted or dissolved by suitable solvents, was determined by gas chromatography or radiometry. Each method was fairly reliable and specific. Reproducibility in a single laboratory was satisfactory, but less so between laboratories.
