Leukocyte-Plasma Interaction in Fibrinolysis

Abstract
IT is generally accepted that urokinase (EC 3.4.99.26) increases fibrinolytic activity by activating the plasma zymogen, plasminogen, to the serine proteinase, plasmin (EC 3.4.21.7).1 , 2 This interpretation is based largely on in vivo and in vitro studies in which fibrinolysis was monitored by blood or plasma clot-lysis methods,3 4 5 which do not discriminate between cellular and fluid (plasma) phase contributions to fibrinolysis. Using a [125I]fibrin solid-phase assay capable of measuring fibrinolytic activities of blood and plasma, we have examined fibrinolysis in a patient receiving urokinase and studied the effects of urokinase in vitro. The findings indicate that leukocytes and the leukocyte-plasma . . .
