Abstract
Secondary electron velocity distributions have been obtained from the back surfaces of thin carbon foils during light ion bombardment. Small peaks in the spectra can be assigned to autoionization of transmitted ions or atoms in the beam, the energies of the electrons with respect to the beam being quite low (0.5-15eV). A simple method of measuring the beam velocity after the foil is described and the possibilities of the beam-foil technique for studying autoionization are evaluated. Keywords
