Anion Effect on Dissolution of Magnesium Metal in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract
Effects of the anions, CI, Br, I, NO3 and SO4= on the self-and anodic dissolution of high purity magnesium have been studied in acid and neutral electrolytes. It was found that these anions influence the self-dissolution rate as well as the local corrosion and disintegration rates that accompany anodic dissolution. It is suggested that both adsorption of the anions and precipitation of insoluble magnesium salts are responsible for the reaction.
