Protection of Domestic TV Programming

Abstract
This article extends previous work on the concept of a cultural discount that has been used to explain the competitive disadvantage of import competing television programs. The consumption of imported programs is regulated by many countries with the expressed aim of securing what are perceived to be external cultural benefits of domestic programs for their societies. After considering the factors that influence the programming choices of broadcasters, I develop a simple model to help illustrate the welfare effects of typical regulatory instruments.Keywords
