Abstract
The findings of AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) Protocol 0761 opened the door to a major effort to reduce perinatal infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We have witnessed a dramatic decline of more than 60 percent in the incidence of AIDS in children in the United States.2 Recently, the zidovudine regimen that was used in ACTG Protocol 076 has been shown to reduce the risk of perinatal transmission even among women with advanced disease.3 In addition, the results of randomized clinical trials conducted in the developing world and observational data from the United States indicate that shorter antenatal . . .Keywords
