Abstract
Scores on Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, which contains a number of need scales, some of which could be particularly associated with drinking behaviors and alcoholism, were obtained from 104 male alcoholics admitted to a treatment unit for detoxification and psychiatric rehabilitation. At 6 mo. after discharge, 73 of these patients were living in the catchment area and had not returned to the unit with further problems, while 31 others had returned for additional treatment. The 15 scales were factor analyzed by a principal components procedure. Only factor 4 [social dependency] showed a significant discrimination between the 2 outcome groups. A prior factoring of a 2-facet matrix relating self-reported emotional states to listed behaviors yielded factor scores which distributed the same patients into those who turned to alcohol, at 1 extreme vs. those who turned to constructive activities at the other extreme while in a state of upset, depression or loneliness. Those who returned within 6 mo. had significantly higher dependency factor scores. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
