Abstract
Lesbiansare women who wear comfortable shoes. Being female means being told how to look. The overwhelming majority of television and magazine advertisements are related to products that enhance the physical attractiveness of women (Dermer & Thiel, 1975; Downs & Harrison, 1985). Social psychologists have developed a large body of literature on physical attractiveness (see Berscheid & Walster, 1984, for a review). Feminist scholars have critically examined the relationship between gender and appearance (e.g., Brownmiller, 1984; Chapkis, 1986; Daly, 1978; Wolf, 1991).
