Pathogenic variability and the unit representing a single fertilization in Puccinia coronata var. avenae

Abstract
Single aeciospore analysis of progeny from both naturally and artificially fertilized crown rust pycnia support the conclusion that multiple fertilization may occur within a single protoaecial cup. Use of single aeciospore cultures afforded a higher level of purity of isolates than had previously been obtainable. Hybridization and genetic recombination can result in the production of many crown rust biotypes which differ pathogenically from each other.
