Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the utilization of corn starch, sucrose and glucose in isonitrogenous (25.32% protein) and isocaloric (3,500 kcal metabolizable energy/kg) diets by 78 pigs reared artificially from 8 to 36 days of age. The protein source was either casein or isolated soybean protein plus DL-methionine and L-tryptophan. When the diets were fed ad libitum from 15 to 36 days of age, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and the average daily gain (ADG) of the pigs fed the diets containing cornstarch were lower (P<.05) than those of the pigs fed the diets containing glucose or sucrose, which were similar. However, when ADFI was equalized among the treatment groups, the ADG was similar for all groups. The gain to feed ratios were similar for treatment groups within each experiment at both ad libitum and equalized diet consumption. The digestibilities of crude protein, ether extract, dry matter and energy increased (P<.05) with age. The digestibilities of these nutrients, plus N-free extract and ash, for the diets containing cornstarch were similar to or greater than those obtained for the diets containing glucose or sucrose. Serum concentrations of total glucose, total protein and urea N were similar for all treatment groups on each day of blood sampling. The apparent biological value and net N utilization were higher for the diets containing glucose and cornstarch than for sucrose. Equalization of the ADFI among treatments clearly indicated that the lower ADG obtained with the cornstarch diet when all the diets were fed ad libitum was due to the lower daily consumption of the cornstarch diet and not to an impaired nutrient utilization of the cornstarch. Subsequent performance results from 36 to 64 days of age, when all pigs were fed the same nursery diet, are presented. Copyright © 1981. American Society of Animal Science .
